Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 10/2/18

FINALS UPDATE: New Amsterdam (1.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The promising new dramas on Premiere Tuesday stayed promising in week two. NBC's New Amsterdam (1.6) at least preliminarily dropped just two tenths from last week (or three tenths from last week's prelims). That would be a much smaller week-to-week drop than even its lead-in This Is Us (2.4) took, though that could change in finals; they'd have about the same drop if they end up at 2.5/1.5. After growing on Monday #2, The Voice (1.8) took a hit on Tuesday #2.

• On CBS, FBI (1.2) was down just a tenth in week two, matching the year-ago week two of Bull. The night remained surprisingly healthy in general for CBS, as NCIS (1.4) and NCIS: New Orleans (1.0) both matched last week's premieres (as well as the year-ago evening).

• Fox Tuesday took a turn in week two as The Gifted crashed to 0.7 in its second outing, while Lethal Weapon stayed at 0.8 and now built from its lead-in.

• ABC stayed off the map on the last Tuesday before the American Music Awards, churning out another two hours of the crumbling Dancing with the Stars (0.7/0.8) plus an encore of A Million Little Things (0.5).

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (2.2) and This Is Us (3.0) adjusted up while New Amsterdam (1.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Premiere Tuesday, much like Premiere Monday, was highlighted by a strong NBC drama launch in the 10/9c hour. This time, it was medical drama New Amsterdam (1.9), going three tenths above the year-ago opener for Law and Order True Crime (1.6). While not quite a breakout on the level of Monday's Manifest, it's once again made more impressive by the fact that the lead-in was much reduced year-to-year; This Is Us (2.9) was off by about a quarter from last year's series high opener. (It was still a great return for TIU, which hasn't hit these levels on Tuesday since October of last year. The Voice (2.1) also ticked up from its somewhat mediocre start on Monday. )

• There was also, like Premiere Monday, a CBS drama premiere at 9/8c, but this one went better; Dick Wolf's FBI (1.3) actually managed to outrate the Monday opener of Magnum P.I. (1.2), and also tied Bull's highest rating in the timeslot last year. Surrounding it were NCIS (1.4) and NCIS: New Orleans (1.0), which looked fairly healthy on a year-to-year basis.

• Fox had a drama duo on premiere Tuesday, young-skewing sophomore The Gifted (0.9) and the third-season premiere of Lethal Weapon (0.8) with a new lead. It will be tough for these shows to survive into whatever New Fox is next year, but they have not taken themselves totally out of the mix at least on premiere night.

• And ABC continued its slow start to the season with another two sluggish hours of Dancing with the Stars (0.9) and a weak 20/20 special at 10/9c (0.5).

Spotted Ratings, Premiere Tuesday 9/26/17

FINALS UPDATE: Bull (1.3), The Voice (2.7) and This Is Us (3.9) adjusted up while Law and Order True Crime (1.6), Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.7) and Legends of Tomorrow (R) (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• After a quiet start to the season, NBC roared into the lead on Tuesday with the return of last year's mega-smash This Is Us (3.8). The show exploded to another new series high, double digits ahead of last season's finale and a full point ahead of last year's series premiere. It was another down night for its lead-in The Voice (2.6), but it could at least beat Monday's rating if it gets adjustment help.
• However, NBC had a second straight premiere with 50% or less retention in the 10/9c hour with the short-order anthology series Law and Order: True Crime (1.7).

• Fox got its fall programming under way with the returns of Lethal Weapon (1.2), The Mick (0.9) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.8). On a new night, Lethal Weapon matched the low point from its first season but is still clearly a success story; and it is noteworthy that the show skewed much younger with competition from NCIS. (Last year's 1.2 came with almost six million viewers, while this episode had just 4.266 million.) Meanwhile, both Mick and Brooklyn bounced back from their results late last season, but still scored well below their respective 1.3/1.1 Tuesday premieres.

• CBS brought back last year's Tuesday trio of NCIS (1.6), Bull (1.2) and NCIS: New Orleans (1.0). The year-ago evening involved Bull's 2.2 series premiere, but both of the NCIS series were down close to 30% from Premiere Tuesday last year.

• And it was ABC's turn to delay its regular lineup for a week, instead going with a Dancing with the Stars-themed Celebrity Family Feud (1.3) and two hours of Dancing with the Stars (1.2). It was a very competitive outing for the Feud, beating its last five ratings from the summer.

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 9/27/16

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (3.3) adjusted up while Scream Queens (0.7) adjusted down.

RENEWOLOGY:

• Despite week two drops, the ABC and Fox shows all came close to last week's R% numbers (which still mostly feel too high to me). Other than Nine-Nine, these shows dropped more in True than the projections guessed, but those were offset by the decreases in where we project the network averages to end up. The True formula is still very kind to Agents of SHIELD due to its incompatibility with DWTS, and it'll be interesting to see if it turns out to have been overrating it when it gets a younger-skewing lead-in in two weeks.

• The worst night according to the formula was actually had by Bull, which fell to 70% in week two. Again, a lot of this is about the network targets rather than the show itself, as CBS seems to be overachieving in general. But it was still only an OK week for Bull itself, and its projected late-season True dropped a bit.

WHAT MATTERS:

• In the first full-fledged night of week two for primetime entertainment series, This Is Us (2.6) remained a huge winner. It was down just two tenths from its already stellar premiere, and still retained most of its The Voice (3.2) lead-in. This was actually tied with the second week of Blindspot (2.6) from a year ago, which is a huge compliment.

• On CBS, Bull (1.9) also held up fairly well in week two, shedding three tenths week-to-week and dropping behind its NCIS (2.1) lead-in. The network also had a reasonable positive at 10/9c as premiere week underachiever NCIS: New Orleans (1.5) ticked up.

• Elsewhere, though, the struggles got more real. ABC's Agents of SHIELD (0.9) shed two tenths from its decent premiere a week ago, leading out of two more hours of Dancing with the Stars (1.4/1.3).

• Fox also had a rough second Tuesday, with a downtick from Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.0) and two-tenth declines from New Girl (1.0) and Scream Queens (0.8).
