The Breakdown: NBC Sunday in 2019-20 (Little Big Shots, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Good Girls and more!)

It's time for a journey through the NBC Sunday schedule in 2019-20...

NOTE: In addition to classic A18-49+, Breakdown posts in 2019-20 also use CVPlus, comparing spring ratings against a higher league average due to viewership inflation from COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. See here for more.

As with ABC, a lot of the event season stuff was stacked earlier this year, allowing the network's drama duo to premiere early enough to qualify as the most frequent winter occupants, but Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist did not get anything going at 9/8c and it brought Good Girls down with it.

If NBC had hoped they might bring in some unscripted options to help out the dramas, those hopes were sorely dashed, as the Melissa McCarthy reboot of Little Big Shots was a disaster that got quickly shuffled to 7/6c. The Wall, airing its first original episodes in over two years, did barely better, but both were massively behind last year's World of Dance.

Little Big Shots: Even the last days of the fast-declining Steve Harvey version were ekeing out at least a 70 Plus in spring 2018. What little we saw of this show at 8/7c was more like a 50, and it only got more embarrassing at 7:00 in the late spring. Really a staggering disappointment. Grade: F.

The Wall: Pretty much whenever it was put in proximity to Little Big Shots, it looked like the stronger of the two shows, though not by a huge amount. The above average is just what it did in the regular season but for the grade I'm throwing in its strong showing in the summer alongside The Titan Games. (Maybe a D+ or so for the regular season and a B or so for the summer?) Grade: C.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist: This grade perhaps gets inflated a bit because NBC had so many Thursday comedy flops and it should be noted that Zoey looked a little better than those. But the DVR gains were still very mediocre for a drama with a low starting base. There was nothing from a Nielsen ratings standpoint to suggest renewal, so either it looked much better in streaming and/or it had internal support, but this is "Rating the Ratings" and those don't show up here. Grade: D+.

Good Girls: This show has had some pretty epic lead-in downgrades in its three seasons, first from The Voice to World of Dance and then from WoD to Zoey. In this case, dropping only 11% with that kind of change actually seems about what you would expect out of a "steady" show (and major DVR gains left it roughly flat in L7+). Grade: B-.

The names in this last table link to the shows' War of 18-49 pages. Links with an asterisk(*) have been updated with the new info. Updates to younger shows will come later in the summer.
