A big growth night for Fox saw its slowest growth in the winter, when 9-1-1 went on hiatus and was replaced with genre drama The Passage. Still, it managed ratings pretty close to The Resident (and better than the year-ago The Resident).

The Resident: To get renewed in the new Fox transition year, this show really had to earn it, and it went out and earned it. Kudos. Take out the Sunday preview to open season one and the show was actually up in raw, an impressive accomplishment even if its timeslot was easier on average. Grade: A-.

9-1-1: It was still a much stronger show than The Resident, but I'm giving it the inferior grade because it had a worse trajectory, and maybe even a bit of an underwhelming one considering how remarkably steady it was throughout the first season. Grade: B-.

The Passage: I usually base my grades for newbies somewhat on how they were looking from a renew/cancel perespective, but with Fox in 2018-19 it's really important to make the point that all these shows would've stood a better chance on a "normal network," rather than a transitioning-to-new-Fox network, and were stronger in a vacuum than what renew/cancel predictors were saying about them. For most of its run, The Passage had ratings that should've gotten it renewed on a normal network. It did sputter on its finale night, and maybe that would've killed it either way, but I think it would've had more cushion for that kind of a performance if everyone hadn't been assuming that even the 0.9's were borderline at best. Grade: B-.
