Cablemetrics: Fear the Walking Dead, Animal Kingdom, Twin Peaks, Stitchers

WHAT MATTERS:

• The Walking Dead's spin-off Fear the Walking Dead returned for what looks like another year of disappointment in the making, with a 1.18/1.04 for its two-hour season premiere. Both those hours were well less than half of the the first two hours of last season (3.08/2.53, which premiered in April 2016). And it was even a significant notch below the mid-1's it was usually getting when we last saw it in early fall 2016. Of course, it should be noted that it is still at over double the rating of everything else on this table...

• Making a much healthier return was TNT's Animal Kingdom (0.44), which was just a hundredth below the year-ago series premiere in its Tuesday return. It was a show that held up very well post-premiere during season one, ending the year on a 0.48.

• Cablemetrics took the month of May off but the biggest story in that mostly quiet month for cable TV was the revival of Twin Peaks on Showtime, which has been a big disappointment at least in Live+SD numbers. After managing just a 0.15 for its two-hour premiere on May 21, it plummeted to an off-the-map 0.04 for two more hours over Memorial weekend, then roared back to a 0.08 last week. Judging from the way Showtime has scheduled this thing, perhaps they knew it was gonna be a niche effort; it had the aforementioned double-pump during the holiday weekend, and will move to 8:00 down the line to give the better slot to Ray Donovan. But it's hard to imagine this is what they were looking for.
• The last episode led into the micro-rated premiere of comedy I'm Dying Up Here (0.03). Unless it can work its way up to being a consistent top 150 show, we will probably not be tracking it here.

• Freeform featured the returns of dramas Shadowhunters (0.26) and Stitchers (0.18) on Monday. Shadowhunters opened the summer half of its second season and went a bit below its winter average. Stitchers was actually up a hundredth from its second season premiere, when the show aired on Tuesday at 10:00.
