The Breakdown: ABC Sunday in 2015-16 (Once Upon a Time, Quantico, The Family, Blood and Oil, AFHV)

It's time for a journey through the ABC Sunday schedule in 2015-16...

The huge Frozen-fueled half-season of Once Upon a Time in fall 2014 meant this was always gonna be a tough lineup to match in fall 2015. But it actually wasn't catastrophic, due to huge gains from newbie Quantico in the 10:00 hour. However, there was very little initial interest in its lead-in newbie Blood and Oil.

Of all the limited series renewals that have cratered in season two, Galavant probably goes down as the worst one of all. It was down over 50% for the season two premiere, and then took the same one-third drop the next week that it did in season one! ABC stuck it out with these wretched Quantico repeats for three weeks and also tried Agent Carter a couple times.

Things got really ugly for the Sunday lineup in the spring, as Once and Quantico both took major spring dips. Help was decidedly not on the way in the 9/8c hour, where The Family was remarkably an even bigger flop than Blood and Oil had been. Even with half the lead-in, Quantico still somehow managed to beat the year-ago Revenge Plus, but by a far less gaudy margin.

America's Funniest Home Videos: Actually hadn't realized just how much it was down until I started this post. The Plus is still fairly typical for AFHV historically, but it's rare to see this kind of drop with this kind of tentpole show. Maybe Tom Bergeron was actually missed? Grade: C-.

Once Upon a Time: ABC's game show lineup fits the summer very well, but the network has to start thinking about some regular season alternatives for this night because Sunday anchor Once may be on its last legs very soon. Matching the Frozen-boosted fall 2014 numbers was never gonna happen, but the spring 2016 run was down almost as much! Grade: D.

Blood and Oil: ABC struggled so much in the second half of the season that fall entry Blood and Oil actually got back up to low-end bubble levels, even in True. But it's probably not much of a reach to assume that B&O would've kept declining as well.

Galavant: The only one of Paul Lee's aggressive bridge series renewals that seemed like a stupid renewal at the time and actually played out that way... in fact, it played out even worse. Grade: F.

The Family: The network's 2016 post-Oscars launch was even worse than Blood and Oil, somehow. It's been a really rough couple of years for the old Desperate Housewives timeslot, with the lone exception being... Secrets and Lies, which will get it back for fall 2016.

Quantico: It was legitimately impressive in the fall, but that is one front-loaded average. Its numbers still looked pretty renewal-worthy even at the end of the season, but it'll be interesting to see if it can actually steady the ship at all in season two. The buzz doesn't particularly seem to be there.

The names in this last table link to the shows' War of 18-49 pages. Links with an asterisk(*) have been updated with the new info. Updates to younger shows will come later in the summer.

Check back tomorrow for this day's new Schedules Plus! Till then, you can refer to the old version.
