Cablemetrics: The Night Of, The Strain, Fear the Walking Dead

These numbers are current through Monday, August 29.

WHAT MATTERS:

• HBO's miniseries The Night Of (0.86) was up another 25% on finale night, ending with its third consecutive new series high. It was an impressive finish, if not quite the 1.0 -> 1.6 explosion from True Detective's season one finale back in March 2014. I'd say it's enough that HBO will at least consider the possibility of bringing the brand name back for another run. 

• FX brought back The Strain (0.62) for its third season at 21% behind last year's premiere, and above the majority of ratings from last season. Since this is a show that was down over 40% from season one to season two, FX would probably be happy if it can keep this pace up.

• It was a down night for most of the other Sunday cable staples, though losing only 2% from the premiere goes down as a win for Fear the Walking Dead (1.59). Some of the other guys (like the Starz shows?) may have had more shared audience with MTV's Video Music Awards than the Olympics last week, and Ballers (0.48) and Vice Principals (0.30) got bumped way later than usual thanks to the super-sized The Night Of finale.
