WHAT MATTERS:
- On a busy final Sunday of the traditional regular season, AMC previewed its new drama Preacher (0.90) at 10/9c after the season finale of Fear the Walking Dead (1.88). Preacher can be a long-term AMC player if it holds anywhere close to that, of course, though it is worth noting that Into the Badlands had very similar retention of a much larger lead-in (3.15 out of 6.51) back in the fall. Preacher also has to wait two weeks for its next original episode, as it will sit out Memorial Day weekend next Sunday.
- The Game of Thrones momentum has gotten real in recent weeks, with a surge to 3.92 two weeks ago and another slight uptick to 3.96 last week, now putting the show up by 5% vs. the first half of last season. The growth may get a bit derailed by the low-viewed Memorial Day weekend this week, but it definitely looks like a return to the fours is possible down the line.
- It was the first time in their five head-to-heads that Game of Thrones more than doubled the competing Fear the Walking Dead (1.88), which inched down a bit more in its mid-season finale. AMC announced the second half of Fear season two will debut on August 21, lining it up with when season one aired last year.
- Perhaps no show illustrates the rapid fall of cable ratings better than USA's Royal Pains. Five years ago, it was absolutely thriving with a mid-1's in the same day ratings. Last week, it returned for its final season with a mere 0.23, and may be headed for its fourth 30%+ seasonal decline in that five-year period.
