The 2014-15 Climate Center: Genres

The Climate Center is the latest way to keep up with some of this site's bigger-picture numbers on a week-to-week basis. It'll provide a running track of trends across the broadcasters, including individual networks, genres, and days of week/time of day. These will include the numbers that have gone into the A18-49+ theme posts, plus some new ones.

The "Genres" post breaks apart all primetime programming to look at trends by category, then breaks apart only the original non-sports series realm to look at trends for dramas, sitcoms and reality.

These numbers are up to date through the end of the regular season: Wednesday, May 20.

Click to expand for more on the "climate" numbers used herein.

Big four categories season-to-date - These numbers 1) index the big four networks' averages in all for all forms of primetime programming compared to the averages for original non-sports series only; 2) examine how the primetime real estate is divvied up among these five categories. Also included are the numbers from both the corresponding week last season as well as the end of last season. Since holiday-time programming tends to throw these things off, both numbers are helpful as a gauge of where we might end up by season's end.
  • I might change this shortly, but for now the so-called "sustaining" programming (special programming that doesn't run ads and isn't counted in final ratings) is not included in the real estate percentages. This is somewhat noteworthy because it makes the total real estate pie a bit smaller in the 2012-13 season (since there were a bunch of debates and election coverage). There might have been more originals at this time in 2012-13 since most of those sustaining slots would've been filled by originals.
Big four original categories season-to-date - These numbers 1) index the big four networks' averages in the categories within the realm of original non-sports series compared to the average for all original non-sports series; and 2) examine how much of each category makes up the full "Originals" category.
  • "Drama" includes all one-hour scripted programs, including shows that may sometimes get labelled as comedies for awards purposes (like GleeDesperate Housewives).
  • The shows put under the "News" label are not all news-themed; it's really just a quick way of saying "low-priority unscripted." Many of these are news (60 MinutesDateline20/20), but a few are not (America's Funniest Home Videos and former staples like Cops and America's Most Wanted).
