Spotted Ratings, Weekend Roundup 9/12-9/14/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The Friday premiere of Utopia (0.7) was two tenths behind the Tuesday premiere. Fox then burned off a leftover episode of Kitchen Nightmares (0.6), and did the same with a couple American Dad! episodes (1.3/1.3) on Sunday.
  • A major rain delay to CBS' first Saturday afternoon SEC game plus another special primetime Notre Dame game on NBC produced an interesting quirk: all four broadcasters were airing football simultaneously for much of the 8:00 hour. CBS' game was the clear winner, drawing about a 2.5 in primetime, and it may have hurt the other three nets (all of whom were way down from their last airings, but all had much worse matchups as well). But it didn't much boost the two-hour Reckless finale (0.6/0.5).
  • On Sunday, the second Sunday edition of Sunday Night Football (8.5) was up a tick from the same game last year, while the Miss America Pageant (1.7) was down three ticks year-to-year. As a preview of the kind of lead-in Madam Secretary may get on Sunday, 60 Minutes got a 2.9 after an NFL that averaged a 9.3 in the 7:00 half-hour. (It may go even higher next week since CBS has a rematch of last year's Super Bowl in the late afternoon.)

I am surprised you haven't been mentioning how well Big Brother is doing in this late portion of the season.

I know you know it, Spot... but 2.9 wasn't exact lead-in that Big Brother received. That's average for the hour, and football fans are gradually drifting away during the hour, so actual lead-in was somewhat smaller. I'm telling this, because there will be people whining about Madam Secretary retention being awful. While in reality, in my opinion, it won't be awful... it will just be very bad.

SNF game was a strange one. For two quarters Bears were slaughtered, they looked helpless until Kaepernick decided to give the win away.
Perhaps there was unusual viewership drop in middle half-hours? People tuning out at start of 2nd half from what seemed to be one sided game, then tuning in again when things got interesting?

Half-hour breakdown on this one would be interesting, yes. The 49ers-Ravens SB had a similar pattern without the comeback actually being completed, and Spot posted half hours on that after the Seahawks blowout, but the power failure delay and the fact it was the SB mean we probably can't draw conclusions from that.

What we can conclude is that BB is having a heck of a season.

Well, at least Utopia is doing better than Rake on Fridays...

Spot,
How did 60 Minutes get a 2.9 True with THAT lead in. They only have a 14% difference in skew, so the overrun should still somewhere in the 5's, right?

Pedantically, it wasn't "the same game last season," but the same week last season. Mind you, as said game was the weather-delayed 49ers-Seahawks blowout, there's the common factor of a horrible loss for the 49ers!
