Spotted Ratings, Monday 4/21/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week two of CBS' post-How I Met Your Mother Monday existence didn't go quite as well as week one, but 2 Broke Girls (2.1), Friends with Better Lives (1.7) and Mike and Molly (1.9) were down only a tick or two apiece. I'd say they are probably at least meeting the low expectations for this lineup, for whatever that's worth. A repeat The Big Bang Theory (1.8) filled in at 9:30 well below its usual Thursday repeat levels, but about the same as an original Mom.
  • NBC had a brutal start to The Voice's live shows (3.0), but The Blacklist (2.8) held admirably again.
  • And after a couple good weeks, The Tomorrow People (0.3) was down again, joining the CW's network-wide April meltdown.

Amazing for Blacklist!!!

The Blacklist had more viewers than the Voice, for what it's worth (probably nothing). The Voice will adjust up, but I doubt overrun into the Blacklist will adjust it down when they are so close

The show is just fantastic right now.

I wonder what NCIS: LA's 1.0 rerun means for who get the M@10 slot next fall. I think it's either that, Person of Interest or Elementary. I think CBS is done trying to throw a new show there in the hopes that it will self-start.

And the plot thickens. NCIS: LA repeat did better (if not adjusted down) than Person of Interest repeat did last week at Mon 10 PM. And this came against stronger competition, so it will be better True, for sure.

Last Monday I declared PoI most likely candidate for Mon 10 PM, like 75%. Mainly because, unlike NCIS: LA, it's not CBS produced. Like, they less care if it's gonna fail there. Now I'm not sure anymore. Perhaps PoI 59%, NCIS: LA 40%, Elementary 1%.

I think it won't be Elementary, because for next 2 weeks they scheduled repeats of PoI, then NCIS: La again. Inference is: if they don't test Elementary there, I doubt they move it there.
I'm sure it won't be new show, only crazy person wouldn't see it doesn't work.

I was surprised by Fox renewing The Following, while de facto cancelling Almost Human. Not by the decision itself, but by the timing. Why not wait until May, see first how things play out?

It puzzled me a lot. So I thought about it a lot, and only plausible explanation I could find is:
Fox wants to stay in procedural business... but they don't want too many procedurals. I mean, from their recent series ordering, we can see they mostly pick serialized dramas, with up to 15 episodes season. They surely want successors for gone House, and soon to be gone Bones, but I guess they want to replace those with something that would last. And, frankly, Almost Human looked like 2 seasons and out - it went into mid 1s already during 13 episodes 1st season. With Bones still alive, ordered to series procedural Backstrom, and Gotham being at least partially procedural, I feel they didn't want to carry one more procedural. They decided to move on from AH, and rather try their luck with some new procedurals.

I'm not saying that's it, I'm just saying that's the only thing I can come up with.

Them trying to test out Person of Interest and NCIS: LA in the slot is the only reasonable explanation for not airing the 6 Unforgettable episodes there. Mondays at 10 is a much higher profile slot than Fridays at 8, which seems like will always be Undercover Boss.

I don't like to brag (who am I kidding, I like), but Chris and I discussed about them scheduling those repeats there some month ago:

Again things doesn't pass eye test.

Last Monday
Castle (R) + The Blacklist (R) = 2.8 (True 2.5), and PoI (R) 0.9 is True 1.0.

This Monday
Castle + The Blacklist = 4.6 (True 4.6), NCIS: Los Angeles (R) 0.9 is same True 1.0.

I know you'll say PUT was higher than usual, and I know that's how formula works. But it seems to me formula overrates PUT a little bit. Or competition is underrated, or both.
