Spotted Ratings, Monday 2/3/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • With so many networks waiting till after the Olympics for their big midseason launches, this was not one of the more exciting Super Mondays in recent memory. The only show on this night that got much promotion during Sunday's big game was The Following (1.9), and it only added to last week's disappointment by dropping another tenth (even with a better lead-in from Almost Human (1.9)).
  • How I Met Your Mother (3.8) saw a truly bizarre adjustment in finals, up a whooping half point to tie last week's 200th episode. With that in mind, the rest of the lineup (2 Broke Girls (3.0), Mike and Molly (2.6), Mom (2.3) and Intelligence (1.5)) holding doesn't look quite so impressive, but it was still another good night for the network in general. They may have benefited to some degree from NBC flopping from 9-11 with a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit special (0.9).
  • ABC's Castle (2.1) also capitalized on NBC resting The Blacklist, growing for a third straight episode.

At this point I'm almost certain that Almost Human S2 would outperform The Following S3, and would hence renew Almost Human over The Following.

I'm also almost certain FOX won't!

I'm still not convinced they can't renew both if they really wanted to. FOX is committed to year-round programming, and there is still a lot of open space in the summer. If X Factor gets the boot, that's three more hours in the fall.

For CBS, that's a very key hold.

The How I Met Your Mother adjustment is shocking!

Thanks!

Thanks! Not promoting Surviving Jack or Almost Human is odd

I cannot understand why FOX is trying to kill Almost Human so badly. I think they got spoiled with the early ratings Sleepy Hollow got early in the fall and thought possibly that that was the new normal for dramas for them... It's the only explanation, otherwise it's not understandable how they went from supporting the show so much before its premiere to completely sabotaging it.

HIMYM had a 4.0 in the first week of February sweeps last year and that was a Superbowl promoted episode. I hope that HIMYM is going to go Breaking Bad with the final 8 episodes!

After Almost Human was at 1.6 to 1.7 ratings in December, what Fox could expect of it in remaining batch of episodes? If they do Best Case / Worst Case, I'd say they had year 2014 episodes at 1.6 / 1.2 with likeliest 1.4.
They're no fortune tellers, how could they predict AH is going to outperform those expectations by half a rating point. Who could predict it? It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback now after couple of great ratings, but Fox had to decide about midseason schedule in December, and it certainly was correct decision to marginalize fading Almost Human in favor of their other dramas.

I'm not mad at them for not knowing AH could perk up. I'm mad at them for debuting a new show in November. I get year-round programming. I don't get starting a show after everyone's already chosen their fall newbies and forcing Bones to change time slots twice this season.

Spot said...

I was wondering if there was any reasonable explanation for that. :O

I would love massive ratings for the finale!

That 3.3 from preliminaries must be a typing error. Dunno what's more embarrassing for Nielsen. That some secretary is typing those ratings into spreadsheet, although they supposedly have state-of-the-art software. Or that noone's checking what she does.

Spot said...

Premiering a show in November doesn't have to be a bad thing. Once Upon a Time was the highest rated new show and one of the highest rated dramas of the season as a whole and it premiered in November. This being said, I do agree that there was probably an issue of bad timing here.

Spot said...

Good thinking. That has to be the reason and didn't even occur to me.

Spot said...

And AH is a procedural, so it's more likely to be able to recover from bad starts to rally later on. (Serialised shows growing is essentially a cable phenomenon made possible by endless reruns.) Once a broadcast serial like The Following goes down, it stays down. (See also: ABC Sundays.)

I presume the -16% y2y is because the game itself went all the way through primetime last year?
