Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/31/13: DOA No Harm

WHAT MATTERS:
  • I thought I was predicting Do No Harm would be dead on arrival, but as most of y'all knew, it was even deader than that... by a long shot. It began with a 0.9 demo, which I believe ties last spring's Bent as the lowest in-season weeknight scripted premiere on the big four evah. It couldn't. Even. Premiere. Above. The. Rock Center. Average. This will present a pretty tough situation for NBC, especially considering 1600 Penn will be the lead-in going forward. This is what I would do.
  • To make Do No Harm look even more brutal, NBC was respectable in the first two hours, especially with the spiking series finale of 30 Rock. That was the show's biggest number since the middle of last season.
  • Fox's recent string of strong nights finally ended as American Idol got its first dose of original The Big Bang Theory and dropped by about 15% from last week. Glee continued what has become a pretty consistent tradition of dropping large in its second week back from hiatus. That is a pretty pathetic level for an Idol lead-out. Fox should be better utilizing this slot, but with what???
  • As for Big Bang, it had a strong outing and killed Idol head-to-head, but it was noticeably below its early 2013 romps against little competition. Person of Interest held the closest to those recent numbers among the CBS shows, while Elementary limped into its post-Super Bowl showcase with a lower-end outing.
  • To round out a pretty interesting night, Scandal has juuuust about closed the gap with Grey's Anatomy, and Beauty and the Beast continues to show some surprising signs of not-complete-ineptitude in its early 2013 run.

I maintain that Thursdays @ 9 would've been a can't-miss slot for The Following. Even though it doesn't actually need the help, a big(ger) lead-in certainly can't hurt, right?

Fox's schedule is so painful, any Monday-Thursday slot would be a can't-miss slot for The Following. I actually like it on Mondays the best as it's the only drama option among the Big 4.

Fox pulling Hell's Kitchen into the regular season mix again is the biggest desperate move they've made this year. Glee is going to get to ride out this season here unless the network decides to do something radical like swap the hour with New Girl and The Mindy Project. I hope Fox ordered a lot of pilots for next season.

Agreed. Still wish Fox would've picked up Cuba Gooding's Guilty for this slot.

Man, I think just about everyone here said Do Not Resuscitate would flop, but not THAT HARD! It makes Deception look slightly less than awful, that's how bad it was.

Those 6s from Big Bang were nice to see, but didn't really mean much without Idol. That's why I didn't understand why so much was made about Idol's mid 5s the past couple weeks without BBT. This actually means something, and it shows that Mariah or not, Nicki or not, Sheldon's the winner. I believe that puts Idol back on the -15% track it was on last year.

Oh, and Scandal. Just doin' what it does now.

As a viewer, I certainly like it there, too, since the reality is toxic and the comedy is stillborn in that hour. And Thursdays @ 9 are certainly crammed in my house, between Grey's, Glee and POI.[note: I myself watch only the last of those. The other two are stupid] I just think, from a programming perspective, a show that's done solid (and strong for the network) numbers w/ a circa 2.5 lead-in would benefit more from the big lead-in than a show that was placed in the slot for the sole purpose of life-support.

Here's another new idea - why don't they just give Glee a short end-run next fall, and then try to launch new shows out of Idol next winter, assuming it's still a force by that point? Other than the idiocy of Kevin Reilly, there's no reason not to.

Is this a series low for Greys?

Idol is a much bigger lead-in in raw numbers but the tonal whiplash would be jarring and the show is much more compatible with Bones, There's also less drama competition on Monday. Factor in Glee then, for me, the coherence of the current schedule gives it the edge.

That said, I totally agree that Fox should shorten Glee's season and launch something new after Idol, if only to free up some schedule space. I'd also like them to cut X Factor Thursday for the same reason.
