First Two Weeks, Animal Practice

WEEK ONE
Animal Practice had some sampling after the Closing Ceremony of the Summer Olympics on August 12 (12.8 million viewers, 4.1 demo), but the show couldn't parlay that into a respectable beginning in its Wednesday lead-off role. Animal Practice debuted with just a 1.4 demo, a considerably weaker number than NBC had with the timeslot premiere of Up All Night (2.4) a season ago. And it tied Up All Night as NBC's lowest-rated scripted show during the traditional premiere week.

WEEK TWO
On the second Wednesday of the season, Animal Practice dropped by just 7%. Usually that's a pretty positive week two trend, but it's not so positive when it leaves you at a 1.3, making it the outright lowest-rated scripted show on the network.

PROGNOSIS
NBC not-so-surprisingly pulled Whitney and Community from their scheduled Friday runs a couple days ago, saying, "we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week -- plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights." The Wednesday 8:00 hour is probably the slot most begging for such a schedule change, and many think that means sending Animal Practice elsewhere (either Friday or the scrap heap) and plugging in Whitney on Wednesday alongside Guys with Kids. (They probably should've done this all along!) Whatever happens, it's hard to imagine that a more favorable situation is going to be created for Animal Practice. Cancel.

"First Two Weeks" is my look at... the first two weeks of a new scripted broadcast show's ratings. I also line up all of the premiere and week two drop numbers together.
