Spotted Ratings, Monday 9/19/11: Ten and a Half Men

WHAT MATTERS:
  • (Big finals adjustment took it above 10.5! Serves me right for going with a speculative headline.) The biggest story of both the night and probably of the entire year to date in ratings was the season premiere of Two and a Half Men. It is pretty difficult to put into words how astounding this rating is, but let me give it a few tries. 1) I believe this is the highest-rated REGULARLY-SCHEDULED (meaning not post-Super Bowl) episode of scripted television in over 4.5 years... since Grey's Anatomy and was still finding the double digits back in February 2007. 2) It's more than double last year's premiere rating for Two and a Half Men as well as any Men rating from last year. The last time Two and a Half Men got HALF this high was 3/8/2010. 3) The biggest regularly-scheduled scripted episode of the 2010-11 season was the Britney Spears episode of Glee, which managed a 5.9 rating. This is 81% higher than that!
  • This lifted the special 9:30 edition of 2 Broke Girls to the biggest rating for a new show series premiere since Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (7.7 on January 13, 2008). And to reiterate, even the 2 Broke Girls rating would be higher than any regular episode of scripted TV from last season (although this was itself not a regular episode).
  • Also in the 2.5 Men halo was the hugely impressive How I Met Your Mother, which actually got a series high at 8:30. Discussion of that show will probably be lost in the Men shuffle, but that's really something. The only real disappointment on CBS was Hawaii Five-0 (3.4), whose second-season opener dropped more than half the 2 Broke Girls lead-in and only barely won at 10:00.
  • The big loser of premiere Monday was NBC, as The Sing-Off expectedly got rather lost in the competitive shuffle and the series premiere of The Playboy Club was particularly weak.
  • Dancing with the Stars returned on ABC and was sharply down from last year's 5.1 premiere rating. However, the ever-impressive Castle nearly won the 10:00 hour despite the huge lead-in discrepancy, and it Truly beat Five-0.
  • Fox had the season finale of Hell's Kitchen, which performed admirably given the competition. (Apologies below for the "Avg" and "Rank" being messed up on Hell's, as I had a glitch in bringing over the Hell's summer ratings to the new 2011-12 sheet. Hopefully will correct that later after I do all the other stuff this evening.)
