Scheduling Five-Spot, WE 1/30/11 - Jersey Shore, Mad Love, The Talk, Missing, Smallville/Supernatural

Here's your Scheduling Five-Spot for the week ending January 30, 2011:

Jersey Shore - Shocker! MTV has renewed the program that is now doing better in adults 18-49 (not to mention MTV's target young female demos) than all but a handful of programs on all of broadcast. It's grown at an almost unfathomable rate, with its whooping 4.34 A18-49 rating in the first five episodes of its third season way up from its first two seasons (which averaged 1.39 and 2.94). The gang will be heading to Italy for the fourth season.

Mad Love - CBS has moved the premiere of new comedy Mad Love up a week to February 14 (Valentine's Day). The show stars Jason Biggs and Sarah Chalke. It'll be looking to do better than the supposedly somewhat shaky Rules of Engagement has in the 8:30 half-hour. Rules has averaged a 3.10 demo to date this season, down 14% on average from its How I Met Your Mother lead-in.

The Talk - CBS has renewed their daytime talk show The Talk. The show, hosted by mother quintet Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Holly Robinson-Peete, Sharon Osbourne, and Leah Remini, was the winner of a development battle with an Andy Richter-led remake of the classic game show Pyramid to inherit the timeslot long held by daytime soap As the World Turns. It's averaged about 2.2 million viewers thus far, down double-digits from year-ago ATWT numbers, but it's trended up in recent weeks.

Missing - ABC has greenlit another scripted show for the summer. Missing is about a former CIA agent searching for her missing son in and comes from the producers of last summer's The Gates. It'll join second-year Rookie Blue and previously picked up and tentatively-titled "Combat Hospital" to give ABC a trio of summer scripted dramas, matching last summer (when they had Blue along with axed The Gates and Scoundrels).

Smallville/Supernatural - The CW made a Thursday afternoon decision to bump the return of Friday dramas Smallville and Supernatural from one night later to the next week (February 4). The move, which came with only about 24 hours notice, drew the ire of both fanbases, but it may have been a boon to Fringe, as the Fox drama (preliminarily) kept the 1.9 demo of its Friday debut last week with Supernatural still in reruns.

More Five-Spots in the Index.
